Our plastic Colored Tiles are perfect for teaching phonemic awareness.  They help students to focus on the sounds in orally spoken words without having to relate the sounds to letters, which is the first step in teaching phonemic awareness.  Many new and struggling readers have difficulty developing phonemic awareness.  Struggling readers, especially, tend to rely on the letter, rather than the spoken word, to identify the sound.  The Colored Tiles allow students to see and touch a symbol for sounds.  Once a student can easily manipulate sounds without letters, that student is ready to associate sounds with letters and learn to read.  Struggling readers can use the Colored Tiles to first identify the sounds, and then use the Small Letter Tiles to can match the sounds with a letter. This technique explicitly shows how letters and sounds relate.
