with short vowels. Students use the cards to create and read both
real and nonsense words. Reading nonsense words serves two purposes.
One is to prepare students to read multi-syllabic words because the
syllables in longer words are often nonsense words. Another purpose
is to ensure that students can recognize and read the CVC and VC
