Our Diagnostic Decoding Surveys are an easy and efficient way to quickly detect when students are having word-level reading difficulties, and pinpoint specific decoding weaknesses.
Use our complimentary set of decoding surveys to assess an unlimited number of students. Schools nationwide use our decoding surveys as a great companion piece to universal screening instruments such as DIBELS, DRA, and AIMSWeb.

The Diagnostic Decoding Surveys enable one-on-one assessment of struggling readers’ phonics skills and are free and easy to administer.
Diagnostic Decoding Surveys allow teachers to:
- Assess the basic and advanced decoding skills of readers of almost any age
- Identify gaps in students’ phonics knowledge and pinpoint specific phonics weaknesses
- Determine whether the decoding skills are being established at an appropriate pace
The Beginning Decoding Survey assesses students’ ability to read high-frequency words and single-syllable decodable words with short vowels, digraphs, and blends. It measures a student’s ability to read words in isolation as well as in sentences.
The Advanced Decoding Survey assesses how well students read unfamiliar single-syllable decodable words with more advanced vowel patterns. The Advanced Decoding Survey also assesses a student’s ability to read familiar and unfamiliar multi-syllable words.
NEW! ADS+
The ADS+ allows teachers to refine their understanding of students who are exhibiting reading difficulties with multisyllabic words or words with advanced vowels. The results can be entered into the Grouping Matrix™ to more effectively target students’ specific decoding issues.
