RGRCOAssessments Required for Using the Grouping Matrix

The Grouping Matrix uses scores from three quick assessments to group students based on the level of their decoding weaknesses. (For students younger than the middle of 2nd grade, only two are needed.) The three assessments and scores required to use the Grouping Matrix are:

1. One-minute oral reading fluency (ORF) screening assessment (AIMSWeb, DIBELS, TM, or any other grade-level passage). Any two of the following numbers must be entered for each student:
   • Words correct per minute (WCPM)
   • Words attempted
   • Words missed

The following from Really Great Reading’s Diagnostic Decoding Surveys*:
2. Beginning Decoding Survey
    • Total score and all column scores

3. Advanced Decoding Survey (for students in the middle of 2nd grade and beyond)
   • Total score and all column scores

* The Diagnostic Decoding Surveys include the Beginning and Advanced Decoding Surveys. Really Great Reading offers a free set of Form A of the Diagnostic Decoding Surveys. To request the complimentary Diagnostic Decoding Surveys, click here. You can also order a User’s Guide that has detailed directions for the surveys and seven alternative forms for monitoring student progress. Click here for the User’s Guide order form.
